Tuesday: Rafa's Post-Match Interview

NADAL def. FISH, 6-1, 6-4.

Not much media left tonight. Hope more people come in, or it will be just him and me. *lol* I doubt they will do a Fish interview.

He held up the press conference while sending a text message. He loves his cell phone.

He’s fine with playing late matches. He likes playing at night. He is used to playing at night. May be a little bit slower at night. He feels good playing at night.

Toni wanted to stay at home with his kids. He changes coaches to fill in for Toni. He is with Francis Roig this week.

He likes playing on hardcourts, and likes the court here. Not looking ahead to clay right now. Last week he won in Dubai on same court.

Grosjean is next. He is one of the best players in the world and he will have a difficult match. He will try to play his best to win. Seb is very tough, and it will be a difficult match.

Re tonight’s match, he’s always prepared for a tough match. He thought he played very well in the first set, very aggressive. He played good in the second set, too, but could not do the break when he had breakpoints. But he could do the break at 5-4, and that was important.

Talks about the new generation of Berdych, Monfiles, Gasquet, etc. Has a good level on tour now. He thinks there will be new players in the Top 10. Re Ferrero, he knows every match is difficult. The level of players is similar and anyone can lose on a given day.

Also he was asked about the Roddick/Federer/Hewitt generation, and he noted that there were other good players in that generation, too, such as Ferrero. I don't think he liked the clay players being left out.

Talks about Agassi match. He’s an unbelievable player, and he had opportunities in the first set, but then Haas played good. Rafa watched the match.

End of interview. I'll head back to the hotel and update the site there.

Great win by Rafa!!!

hi susan

ijust got at the office and the first thing i did was surfing to your blog. And i just finf out rafa won, my day has started at the best possible way now. Loved your report, only wish i could have been there myself, watching this exciting game. It seems rafa had more confidence than in the first game at this tournament, and he played better.

It was really nice to read about Rafa giving Ferrero some props.

Before his injury and illness, JCF had such a great game that transitioned well from the slow to the fast court. He went from winning the FO to playing the finals at the USO in the same year- pretty great achievement!

So happy to hear that Rafa does not want people to forget JCF's skills.

Hi Susan,

great report once again. i was already i the office when the second set started and have been with the live scoring board plus updates from the rafa-fish cheering thread. I know Rafa an do it. He is a fearless fighter and always does his job 100%. That's why he is such a threat to anyone in whatever surface.

For night games. Yes its right he loves the night games but i felt that he must also save loads of energy for any day or afternoon matches under such heat.

Thanks for these and what a great win again. Looking forward for your live blog again for his doubles match and against Grosjean .

Hi Susan
thanks for reporting the interview - so you weren't alone with him in the end ?:)
Love the way he answers and speaks of his opponents (think he should not have it too difficult with Grosjean though) and am glad he feels he's improving his game, that's good for confidence !

Susan...did you go to the Fish press conference? I've been looking for his comments and haven't found them anywhere yet.

Thanks for everything!

PS...we have been kind of planning a trip to Cincy this year, and I think it will HAVE to happen after reading about all the fun you've been having!
