Wednesday: Miami Preview

Rafa is scheduled to play his good friend and mentor Carlos Moya on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, I don't have TV coverage, so live blogging isn't an issue. I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Miami last year, but my family seems to think back-to-back tournaments is a bit much. So it's either IW or Miami for me, and this year I chose IW, primarily because it is a 3-hour drive away instead of a 5-hour plane ride. Both tournaments are great, though, and each has its special points.

We do have some fans in Miami, and if we get any cute news about Rafa this week, I'll post it here. And if it's possible to do any live blogging on matches here, for those of you without TV coverage, we'll do it.

We'll be following the match through the live scores on our Rafa-Board, and with luck, someone will have TV coverage and be able to give us some details.

Thanks, daylily.

I'll do another one this summer, but I have a day job that is very important to me, so Rafa has to take a back seat. *lol*

In the meantime, I will try to line up folks who are going to tournaments to give us "inside" news and site blogging.

I expect that we'll have some of that from Monte Carlo. Hint to LZ!!!!

Where went the schedule of Rafael Nadal upcoming tournaments from VamosRafael.com? The official site lists only every tournament in existence which is a bit useless. Is the list still on VamosRafael.com?

6-2 1-6 1-6 !!

Well, I must say I'm glad it was Moya that took his service apart and not someone else!

All we need now is for an in-form Arnaud Clement to down Federer - that would really please the organizers!!

I was going to do a separate blog entry called:

Friday: Post-Mortem

But I can't do any new blogging because our blog has been closed as a potential spammer. I'm sure they'll open it up later, but it just highlights what a bad day it was overall.

Still, I think the reaction to Rafa's loss to Carlos Moya is an over-reaction. He's reached the semis in the last 3 tournaments he has played, and beat Federer to win one of them.

Moya is a very good player, and he knows Rafa's game better than anyone. Rafa did not play his best tennis today, for whatever reason, and Moya played exceptionally well. So Rafa lost. The scoreline of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 is somewhat surprising, but that doesn't mean that Rafa has lost the ability to play great tennis and to win matches.

We all got a little spoiled watching him win practically every tournament he played last year. That is not usual. And he nearly killed himself in the process. By the end of the year he had tendonitis in both knees, was walking around Madrid with ice packs on his knees and injured his foot in the process.

He was out for nearly four months, and his team decided he would have to make adjustments to shorten matches (that's why he is going for his serves more), and he is playing with new insoles. He is making these necessary adjustments, but he's human. He's under a lot of pressure, especially with the Federer rivalry, and he's going to have bad days. He had one today, and now he has time to rest his ankle and get mentally and physically prepared for the clay season.

But there will be even more pressure on him there. Hopefully he'll be able to win everything in sight as he did last year, but if he doesn't, that won't mean his career is over. It will mean he has things to improve for coming years.

Rafa is not a run-of-the-mill journeyman player. He is a great player, who has already made history at a young age. He isn't going anywhere, and neither are we. At age 19, he has time to improve all aspects of his game, and to continue his success on Tour. I'm sure we'll be celebrating many wins in the future. But not in Miami this year.

Now onto Monte Carlo!!!!
