Saturday: Post-Match Interviews

Rafa will be in the interview room in 5 minutes. So I'll blog from there. Claire is going to use Uncle Lopy's camera to take photos so I can give you immediate info. I type faster than I write.

Rafa’s Interview. BLAKE def. Nadal, 7-5, 6-3.

Here he comes. He’s eating a cookie. He loves his cookies. No ice cream, I guess. Same gray jacket on. He just answered the phone, and is talking on it. He says, sorry.

Claire got a photo of it, and she is taking photos while I type.

He says, “Not the best day today.” He says Blake played very good. He says that Blake had confidence. Rafa fought all much. Maybe a bit too defensive in the first set. Played better in the second set. Had chances, had breakpoints. But Blake served unbelievable outside on the line. So nothing he could do.

Blake plays very aggressive all the time. Rafa does, too, but not the sam way James does. It's different. He says that in the difficult moments for him, Blake had good luck for him. He’s not going to put any excuse in, but the wind may have had something to do with it. But James played better.

James is playing at a very good level – top 5 level. He said, “We will see what his level is on clay.” Then we’ll know more. But he says he likely will stay in Top 10, but only Top 5 if he does well on clay.

Rafa is chewing on his cookie.

He could have done more today, but he tried his best, and fought all match. But James played better than him all day. He had chances, but James played better.

As for the injured foot, left one is okay. The other one is the problem. The right one, not 100%, but not too much of a problem today.

He says Federer will win. His favorite is Federer for tomorrow, but he says Blake can win. He says the favorite is always the No. 1.

He’s looking so cute now. The expressions are priceless, as he switches to Spanish to try to answer question.

For James to beat Federer, he has to believe he can win. That is the key.

He wanted to play the final, against Roger, but he wanted to play the final against anyone.

Re James and clay, Rafa says he’s a good player, but doesn’t know how he will do on clay. On clay, all matches are little bit different. Had a cute moment as he struggles with the word “effective.”

Sarah asked him about his signing autographs after today’s match. He said, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but he always has to stay with the fans. He appreciates the fans, and he understands that most were behind Blake, but he appreciates the sport and the fans. And he noted that in Madrid that worked in his favor, where there wasn’t one fan behind Ljubicic.

And he just announced he’s going to win Wimbledon this year!!! Seriously, a British journalist asked about his prospects for Wimbledon and he said, “I’m going to win.”

And on that note, the conference ended. He sounded upbeat, and looking ahead to Miami, and Wimbledon, I guess.

The media are back from the interview, and I love all the women going, “How cute is he?” As he’s munching cookies, laughing and smiling.

Claire got tons of photos. And Sarah, Claire and I are going to the Outback Steakhouse. Cynthia Lum, the photographer will meet us there later. Vamos!!!

The view here in the media room is that Blake is riding a huge wave of confidence, and is the "in form" player of the moment. Nothing against Rafa, or even Roger -- there are some who think James will win the title. And that's why I'm going to stay for the match, instead of heading home early to see my family. Maybe we'll see something special.

Susan, thank you so much for doing this blog throughout the week! You did such a great job covering Rafa's matches and press conferences! Thank you so much!

btw, i can't believe rafa said he's going to win wimbledon. Im really surprised that he would say something like that cuz he always downplays his chances...

He was joking re Wimbly. It was such an out-of-left-field question to ask him about Wimbledon, when the clay season isn't here yet. And he answered the same question a few days ago. The Brits are obsessed with Wimbly of course. So he just said that to be "cute." He was very cute in the whole interview. We support a very special player.

Susan your post-match interview blogs are the BEST! I am so glad he has his appetite, his sense of humor, and his trusty cell-phone.

Thank you so much for this post-match interview report, Susan.

I liked his answers and his demeanor and it does wonders for my mood to read this.

The Wimbledon remark was obviously a joke. (I just hope that every journalist present will get that)

We are looking forward to the replay here in the USA later tonight Sat 11:30PM Pacific = Sun 2:30AM Eastern.

Playing tennis in high winds is as dumb as playing football in the rain.
But it's all about money and schedules.

At 19 it is best not to win everything too quickly. Can go to one's head and stop one from improving. Federer's loss to Nadal in Dubai was probably invaluable to Fed and just what he needed.

Onward to the Nasdaq.

Rafa will take his prize of 45 race points and $114,000 USD quite respectfully and look back at all the top players who were blown out before even the qtr-finals. This was a tough tournament for everyone.

Hi Susan will you be heading straight to Miami.

and how's rafa's ankle ??? do you think that he'll be a 100% then?

Thank you, Susan.
I've been following your blog since the first day.
I love your blogging and your attitude in reporting the games.
I'm quite sad about Rafa's lost, but no grudge.
I'm glad Rafa's cool with the lost, I love his attitude, no excuse, is always willing to ackwnoledge his opponent and the crowd. That's what's called gracious. I'm proud of Rafa.
I wish his right ankle is
ok.

"Rafa acts like he won the match." lol. I have to admit I'm disappointed; would've loved a Fed-Nadal final. Rafa seemed to start tamely today pushing Blake's confidence into overdrive. Rafa made some amazing gets.
Thanks for your efforts Susan. Love the little details. Really make me smile. As for Rafa signing after the match - I'm a Federer fan, & find it very poor that he hardly ever signs - even after winning. Fantastic to see Rafa do this :D

I am going to be very honest with you.

As you all know, I'm a huge Rafa fan and have been so for 3 years.

But what I saw this week makes me even more of a fan, if that is possible.

Rafa is very special.

Yes Susan Rafa is really a very very special player and a very very special human being
I've overcome (a little!) my disappointment this morning when I re-read his interview : that's really great how he acknowledges Blake and how he doesn't find excuses !
Hope Blake doesn't become his "bête noire" as we say in French !
Enjoy the finals Susan - we'll all support Rogelio !
Thanks again for everything to you and Lopy!!

Susan, great report from the conference, good to hear that Rafa was smiling and even joking.
I too hope that the journalists got the joke about Wimbledon. Remember what some reporters wrote when he joked about the Lourdes water during Madrid? ;-)
Thank you so much for doing this blog for us!

I can't wait to see the photos... i can't wait for the next tournament, and i certainly can't wait to see rafa playing again. To see rafa doing what he does best! ;)

It's so nice to hear that Rafa wasn't too disappointed after the loss. I only saw small bits of the match but James seemed to play on very high level there. Thanks for all these blogs, Susan! :)

Susan - you're an angel - muchas gracias!

*lol* @ the cookies! Laura was eating cookies and I was craving one (or anything edible at 2am!) in the cheering thread on the MB - maybe Rafa picked up on those vibes ;)

Loving the Wimbledon comment - he must get fed up of being asked so far in advance about his Wimby prospects - give them something to talk about I guess. Of course he'll win it ;)

VAMOS RAFA - Miami here we come!
