Sunday: Hotel Room No. 5 in Indian Wells
Yes, folks, you are not going to believe this, but I'm back in Indian Wells. This time I'm at the IW Resort Hotel, which is where Marcos stayed this week.
It's a long story, but I missed my turn to get the I-10. I got into Palm Springs, stopped at a gas station and got directions. This was having stopped at another gas station to get gas and to get some tape to tape the lens into my eyeglasses (long story there). But I had the Steve Urkel looking going there.
Finally, I got on the I-10, and was feeling better about things, when it started raining cats and dogs. I wasn't happy about that, but then traffic slowed down to 10 miles an hour. I turned on traffic news and discovered a truck had overturned on the freeway, and had slowed down traffic for miles.
At that point, I knew it would be hours before I got home, and with my taped glasses, the visibility was horrible. So I called Lopy, and he suggested I should stay another night. I called my husband, he was less thrilled with the idea, but at this point I wasn't feeling well, I knew I'd be on the road for hours.
After a few calls, I got a room at the IW Resort Hotel, which is a Motel 6 hotel compared to the other two. It's definitely the worst out of the 5 hotel rooms I had this week, but it does have the advantage of free internet which works. *lol*
I finally got back here after driving a total of 70 miles, and ending up back in the place where I began. I met up with Lopy for a quick dinner, but I was frustrated that I was not able to get home, and I think I'm just tired from about 2 and a half weeks of hecticness, between work and tennis. And after I got back here, I learned the rain I had run into had turned into snow, and that was causing even more troubles. I knew if I had run into snow at that point, it would have put me over the edge.
Anyway, I'm going to get up at 5:30 a.m. and head back during daylight hours. The weather should be better hopefully, and I'll get home at a reasonable hour.
And Bob and I got to spend a bit more time together. In fact, we figured this would start a little gossip with you all. We contemplated running away to Miami for the Nasdaq, but figured that we better pace outselves a bit more.
I was planning on leaving on Friday, but only stayed because Rafa was still in the event. I told Lopy today that it was such a great week. I said the only thing that would have made it better is if he had won. And Lopy said, "I think that would have been too much for us. We already lived through two difficult matches; a Federer final may have done us in." And I think he's right. For some reason, it's easier watching him play on TV, although not as much fun.
One more thing. As you know Tennis Warehouse is our major sponsor. They are wonderful to us, and they treat our site as a business, as shown by the new Pro Shop. But some of the people who post there make fun of me for being an old lady obsessed with Rafa. Little do they realize I was one of the youngest people in IW this week. But this week I did some blogging for the TW MB of non-Rafa matches and gave them some info. Last night, I was in a hurry, but I posted my notes from Rafa's press conference. I failed to take out the cookie references and to how cute Rafa looked during the conference. They don't seem to understand I'm writing this stuff for Rafa fans and not for them.
So they made fun of me, and one guy rudely stated that I'm 60 years old and on my period, which is a dangerous combination. Aside from being totally inaccurate, it says more about their obessesion about making fun of people than about my Rafa obsession.
I started a site for 16-year-old player because I thought he was going to be great, and that his career should be chronicled. Of course, I know a lot of about him because, as Lopy said, anyone who writes a biography about someone has to do a lot of research about that person as part of the job. They become an "expert" on that person. In essence, I'm Rafa's biographer -- I am chronicling his career (along with Nathalia), and we are doing for the benefit of his fans.
Rafa knows me. His management knows me, and has been complimentary of the site. Rafa is always very nice to me when he sees me, and I am respectful of his privacy when I'm at a tournament he attends. He appreciates what we do on this site, as he should, and if people have a problem with that, it is their problem, not mine.
Personally, I think the people who attack me are jealous that they aren't going to events and having the same opportunities that I have. Again, that's their problem, not mine. They could do this with the right motivation. There's no secret to it. I work very hard to make the money to travel to events, just as I work hard to make a nice site for his fans to enjoy. That I get one or two "vacations" a year to enjoy my hobby at an event is a real bonus, and I'm entitled to that. Just as others may choose to spend their vacations playing golf or going to Club Med. This is "my thing," and if Rafa has no problem with my being their to report on his matches and practices and such, I have no idea why others are concerned. Or why they have to say extremely rude things about someone they don't know and will never know.
As for older ladies "swooning" over Rafa, I'm not the only one. I met many grandmother types who were there just to see Nadal. The the lady volunteers in the press office just love Nadal and were talking about how cute he is. I met one lady -- much older than myself -- who flew in from New York just to see Rafa. Rafa is adored by women of all ages. I'm not the only one who thinks he's "very special" both on and off the court.
As Peter Bodo said in his blog recently, one thing about doing a blog is that you can say what you want. And I thought it was high time that I addressed the speculation about why I do this site. I just love tennis, and doing this site is one way I can support the sport and promote a guy who is great for the sport. Nothing more, nothing less. If I didn't do it, someone else would. My age is irrelevant, except to the extent that I'm now old enough that I have the income and time to enjoy my hobby at times. I certainly couldn't have come to IW if my children were 2 and 6. And I didn't have the money to do this when I was 20. Indeed, at age 20 I wouldn't have had the money to pay for the server and keep our photo albums on line.
I also enjoy going to events to meet up with other "tennis" friends. As you all know, I spent a great deal of time with Sarah, Claire and Cynthia, as well as Bob. I also did a lot of socializing in the media room with people I've met before. It's a lot of fun.
And as for being a huge Rafa fan, I'm one of thousands. And I'm no more rabid about Nadal than many fans are about Federer. The only difference is that I put my money where my mouth is and do something constructive to support the guy. And I certainly wouldn't put all this time, money and energy into the site if I didn't think he, and certainly his fans, were worth it.
Thanks again for visiting our blog this week. As Bob says, it was our pleasure to bring these Rafa moments to all of you, and we look forward to doing it again soon.

What people will come to realize Susan is that Rafael Nadal is a very unique human being and that you happened to feel that somewhat long ago. He inspires hope and energize young and old... Charisma does not need explanations you got it or you do not... Nadal happens to be blessed with an incredible charismatic personality... he is not just handsome or polite or nice and courteous and etc. He is unique... and some people get it... and some do not. Let it be for the detractors, pathetic human beings! Meanwhile let's enjoy Rafael Nadal, because it is rare to find a human being such as him. Sigh!
Thank you for the biography, it is an incredible achievement!
Oh my you don't know the game to and from the desert well basis time of day on a work day.
Important. Don't bother getting up early to go into town. Leave at about 9 am or you will hit the mega inbound morning commuter traffic. In fact it would be best if you left perhaps at 10 am. The traffic is always heavy but if you leave at 6-7:30 you will head right in to grid lock commuter traffic.
Here's the freeway movement map.
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=traffic&id=3308823
copy the entire link.
click the various areas to see if the freeway is lit up in red. It will turn red pretty quick after 7 AM heading into LA.
Bravo Susan! Well said. I guess they're all just jealous that you've created the best tennis player fan site ever... and that you had the great foresight to recognise talent and charisma when saw it three years ago.
Hope you have a good trip home (and that you have read 'Frank Sinatra's' travel advice before you set out).
Mia
just wanna say thanx again for the great blog and thanx tons to lopy for the brilliant pictures!
Hi Susan,
i just wanna say thank you fr the bottom of my heart for starting the website and forum, even though i dont post in the forum anymore due to my tight sch scheduele. but i still pop by the forum cos i know i can always count on it to provide me with whatever latest info on Rafa. i really appreciate all that you've done, as well as this blog because i really enjoy reading your entries, right fr the first one (: heck the extreme minority who criticise, because there are way way way too many out here who really appreciate what u do.
and it was really indeed one regret that i didnt meet up with you at the shanghai masters last yr :( once again thanks for all you've done, all well as Lopy for the awesome pictures the past week!
cheers,
Alyson
How unfortunate that the weather became so bad in there. I hope you'll get home well, Susan. Drive safely!
PS. And about the other thing in your post. There have always been (and will be in the future) people who find their joy in saying bad things about others. Ignoring them is the best thing to do. ;-) You've done a miraculous work with VR.com and true people will understand and appreciate that. *notworthy*
Susan thank you very much!!!
I totally agree with you and I think this people are so jealous and would love stay in your place...
Your job in vr.com and MB is fantastic and we appreciate that very much...
Thanks Lopaka for that wonderful pictures!!!
dear susan
I'm a 3o+ year old married woman with 2 kids and a huge rafa fan. I often get remarks like ;are you not a little bit too old to be a rafa fan;(that is actually one of the nicest remarks)But i don't care what anybody thinks about it. the fact that he's goodlooking is a nice bonus but not the reason why i am a fan.
Susan:My sister and I are big tennis fans, whenever I make a remarke about Rafa her retort is you are 50 years old he's just a kid.I tell her yes just a kid with an incredible talent. Watching a Rafa match on TV is so much more exciting then any other player. He brings such joy and poetry to his game. I have never seen him direct any anger towards the umpires like some players. He plays with such intensity and plays to win every point he never gives up. I have a 14 year old who has been playing for several years and he admires Rafa's dedication to the game.I love your site and stumbled on it quite by accident. After looking up all of the other main players in the game today your site is far superior. Thanks for you work. And yes I'm jeolous, maybe someday I'll get to see Rafa in person.
I'm 60+ and I think Rafa rocks! Our young hero is - as another 'golden oldie' interviewed during the Marseilles tournament said in her native French - "Sublime".
Meredith
Thank you Susan. I really appreciate everything you do for Rafa. It makes me particularly proud that you recognized the greatness in him when nobody else had. You rock girl.
Age has it's benefits Susan! Along with the time and money to enjoy ones' hobbies comes the self-confidence to not care what other people think or have to say about it.
As for the relentless harridans on the TW board, why do you care what they think? Why are you always so courteous to people who show you such disrespect? Just tell them to go fuck themselves, and then continue on your merry way without giving them a second thought :-)
susan, what an ordeal for you! omg....people are so petty sometimes. i hope that the waves of warmth and good karma that we all feel toward you for enabling us to enjoy and participate in the life of our baby bull alleviate the inconvenience and distress of all your travails....and i have to say that not having your wondefully evocative commentary to look forward to a couple of times daily is a sad, sad thing. ah, well, onward to Miami -- but no fabulous blog from Susan!
Mary Walsh says--
Susan I think the traffic jam was an omen. You are supposed to be heading east toward MIAMI!
Just tell the family to meet you there! And of course bring Lopy with you!
Miami will not be the same
without our intrepid reporters!
I agree with Carly about your critics--they have
problems. Often the people
who are critical of you
are critical of everything except their personal
shibboleths. Not worth
the time or energy bothering with them!
Thanks for the blogs!
Drive carefully--EAST!
Dear Susan,
Thank you (once again) for all these marvellous jobs you have done for us...the report, the 'unbelievable' Rafa's site, and etc. Besides Rafa, you are the greatest!! :)
And for those poor souls who were so lost that they didn't know what they have said... just let them bark..ermmm I meant.. say it. At least we know that we're doing the right thing.
For me, I'm almost 30 now... but I can say that I've never fell in to any of the celebs or sports icons as I did with Rafa. (Roby Baggio was my another passion...but that time there were few info about him... and there's no internet yet, so don't know where I could share my feelings) Rafa is so special. He's not only great in court but off court as well. Now I can say that I 'LOVE' this boy.. not a kind of boy-girl love, but it's more than that. Besides being a great tennis player, his personalities caught me. If I'd ever had a brother, a son ... I wish they'd have his character... brave but not arrogant. Aggressive, but not rude. Gentle but not weak... and etc. He's such a role model (esp. his reaction about his loss to Blake... classy!!) I wish there could be more people like him around here... and my world will be much better. ;)
Now, I even spend more time on him, and on this great community more than I spend with my boyfriend (he lives somewhere else) I'm now working hard on turning him to be one of Rafa's fan :)
And... Have a safe trip home, Susan.
Hasta luego
Nida
Believe me...it's not just the ladies that are swooning for Rafa.
Carly's right Susan! Just show those idiots you're middlefinger! They are not worth you're bother and do not deserve you're justification! Yóu know why you love tennis and love Rafa, which is all that matters and we are só grateful to you for sharing this love and all the great inside info few others could get for us ,even remembering a lot of us love to read how cute he looks at a pressconference, munching on cookies ;-) !
99.9% of those morons would be dying to be in you're shoes, and have the possibilities you have, but don't dare to admit it to eachother and even themselves. As for them getting at you for your age...Can anyone please define the proper age for being a tennisfan? Can you only be a real tennisfan when you're 20? 25? 30? 35? ..Or are you only allowed to be a fan of a player who is around you're own age? Well, that leaves just Agassi and Bjorkman for me then... And in a couple of years, ESPN classics.. Oh dear... Vamos Susan, ace them!
Tanja
Charles, you bad boy! ;-)
just kidding!
Tanja
"Rafa is adored by women of all ages." That's for sure, Susan. And I don't think this is a problem. Everybody has the right to like/adore/cheer on whoever she/he wants. What about 60-years-old managers who swoon for cover girls and have their calendars at the office? Come on, be serious and honest. (but for men it's a normal thing, you know it's a world built for men).

Congratulations Susan, great job and all my support!!! I just copy an extract of an email I sent Nathalie and you on April 27 last year. Thank you again, take care, Cristian
"Hola Susan y Nathalie,
Muchas felicidades to both of you, yesterday I checked the site for the first time and it is amazing to see what you are doing for the global Nadalmania.
Don't worry if you don't have time to reply, I understand there are hundreds and thousands of people thinking of Rafa Nadal through both of you. Thanks and regards,"
Thank you soo much Susan for the last week of your hard work! I am sooo glad you had fun! You deserve it after all the hard work you do for us Nadalettes and the website!! Enjoy yourself and dont let those people get into your way! They ARE jealous!!!!!
<3 Sofia
Hi Susan,
This post of you almost brought tears to my eyes !
I really have to thank you for this blog and for the fantastic site you created : i discovered Rafa at last Roland Garros and immediately fell for him ! i wanted to know more about him and the first site i found was VR : since then i've been visiting it nearly everyday : i really appreciate all the info, pics, videos and so on and also enjoy a lot the forum :-)
it's just great and you're doing a wonderful job !
As for the rude comments made on you, just don't bother, they come from jealous, callous and narrow-minded people.
As you say anyone can Love Rafa, age has nothing to do with it, 'cos he's not only a great and exciting player, he is such a fine human being, so special as you say !
So Vamos Susan, and Vamos Rafa !
Lucie
Someone once said... 'You only live once but if you work it right, once is enough'.
You're following your dreams Susan so my advice is... don't stop 'cause you're 'working it right'!!
Good luck !!
SUSAN, YOU ARE THE BEST EVER!!!
I could talk about disrespectful people, but I'm going to use my time thanking you and Lopy for this incredible experience.
And I want to thank you for being this amazing woman (I don't know how old are you, and I don't think that's important either) and for let us, Rafa's fans, know a lot more about him.
You are our bridge to him and I'll always be grateful for that.
Seguí luchando como nuestro torito...
Un gran cariño,
MArian.- ARG
thank you for VR and this blog.
Pish posh. What? One can't become a fan of pure tennis talent unless we are under 20?
Alternately, cuteness is as cuteness does. If we've noticed some cute behaiviours, so be it.
It's unbelievable how certain people can be mean about fans...do they really believe that you are a fan and you follow Rafa only because you want to marry him?! Come on! What's wrong in being over 20 or 30 or 40 or whatever age and following Rafa? He plays such a great tennis, I mean he is a sensetional player, does things on court that others may not even think. That's why a lot of people defined "overage" are following this wonderful guy.
For these silly persons, making silly comments about a professional and devoted boigrapher as Susan is, there is just a way of feeling important: criticize and fool around smart people cause they will never be.
Susan, keep up the great work you are doing for thousands of women and men around the globe that daily watch your blog and site.
Once a great writer as Dante Alighieri was wrote on Divina Commedia "Non ti curar di lor ma guarda e passa", that in english sounds like "don't bother about them, just watch (them) and step beyond"...
Ciao,

Susan your work and dedication are invaluable to Rafa and to his fans. Please don't ever feel unappreciated or undervalued.
What nice messages to wake up to. Thanks so much.
I got home yesterday morning after an uneventual (thank goodness) drive home. But I was exhausted, and after saying hello to the kids, went to bed and didn't get up until this morning.
I'm in what we call post-tournament syndrome, where you have to get back to "real life" after living the wonders of "tennis life." It's always tough to make the transition, but worth it. Also, if going to tournaments was my real job, then they wouldn't be so special, would they?
I appreciate your comments and understanding why I do this website. I should just realize that not everyone is as enlighteneded as Rafa fans.
And I understand more and more why Rafa has become some an icon. He had the female journalists "swooning" during his press conferences, especially the last one. I heard one comment, "I'd love to take him home and make him dinner." I think most of us feel that way. :D
As for a Miami blog, I'm going to do one, but, alas, it will have to be remotely. But I can blog during his matches on TV (if we get them), and post any bits of news we get from Miami. I'm sure there are fans there who will be happy to provide us with information.
Thanks again. Love to you all.
Susan xxoo
You have two working home pages.
One is;
http://www.vamosrafael.com/
or
http://www.vamosrafael.com/index.html
the other is;
http://www.vamosrafael.com/home.html
You might best delete the file "home.html" or modify it to redirect to the underlying URL being the first one. Normally home pages have their top file named index.html. Have you changed web page creation software?
This is probably why many people on message board could not see your update re: Rafael's award. They probably have bookmarked the page with the one with "home.html" address.
You know what Susan, just ignore those bloody jealous people, don't let them rub into your nerves.
The work that you put in so much and sharing it to all those who are inspired by Rafa's skills in the sport that he is in is only not fantastic but somehow extremely thoughtful of you.
I am so blown away (honestly) of all your accounts for us to keep updated of Rafa's activities. As ive said you're our greatest ambassador for him.
What youre doing to this site is unbelievable that's why we're so drawn about in here.
I so honour you on how inspired are you in doing such work for VR.
Note that you're greatly appreciated !!!!!
I'm your fan though - they should know that youre already a celeb. in the making !!!! UHOOOOOO!!!
Vamos Susan!!!
Tournament play is well started and the Carlos Moya vs Victor Hanescu round-1 match will be coming up shortly.
Nice thing about the Nasdaq-100 tournament is they keep their PDF draw sheet updated in real-time on match completions.
Check the 2 page draw sheet at any time. Following link.

Too bad Moya got seeded where he did with the potential of facing Rafa in Rafa's first match.
Are there other place(s) to post messages without being an official registered member of a Rafael Nadal fan association?

The Rafa Board is pretty informal, not really an "official association". You register with a nickname. Come along and join in - you'll be made most welcome.
http://xsorbit31.com/users5/vamosrafael/
This is the address of the temporary messageboard (you are directed to this at the moment from the VamosRafael.com homepage while the server gets their act together to get the regular board back on line).
Moya is up a break in the 3rd and deciding set against Hanescu. If he holds of course that means it will be Carlos Moya vs Rafael Nadal Friday, or Saturday in Rafa's first match of the 2006 Nasdaq-100 Masters.
Hopefully that match will be Saturday as ESPN2 has 3PM to 5PM+ and 8PM to 11PM+ EASTERN USA TIME scheduled live TV coverage in the USA.
Otherwise it will be Hanescu/Nadal. Rafa is 3 & 0 against him.
Stanislas Wawrinka(SUI), a solid player, knocked off Andy Murray in round-1. This is a player Rafa could well meet up with in round-4. Be a great match.
Nice picture of Tomas Berdych in the Parrot Jungle. (link below) From Nasdaq-100 site. Copy entire link left to right (it may not all be displayed)
Rafa could well come across Tomas in their Semi-Final.
Tomas has been eratic but remember he has the lone ninth Masters Crystal Shield Rafa and Rogelio did not win in 2005, notwithstanding Nalbandian's capture of the Giant Masters Cup Shield. Use link for image. Copy entire link left to right (it may not all be displayed)
