Sunday: The Vamos Brigade Celebrates Rafa's Victory!

It's a great moment in Rafa-Land today. Today is Nathalia's birthday, and she's quite happy that Rafa gave her a nice birthday present. Indeed, he played so well today, especially to close out that tiebreak under pressure. Congratulations.

And our intrepid reporters in Monte Carlo were there to watch it all. Here's their report from the trenches. Thanks so much to them for all their news and photos this week. We got to live it through them, and that's almost as good as being there:

OH MY GOD!!!!!

What a match!

Far too emotional right now to write much of a blog. You have it easy on the cheering thread you know. With the possible exception of Jacob Higgins and JMFederer you aren't exactly surrounded by Federer fans as we were. Even the person behind us that I know from Wimbledon queuing was supporting Roger - complete with Swiss flag and constant shouts of "Go Roger!"

We shouted ourselves hoarse! British reserve went clean out of the window as we vamossed as though our lives depended on it.

What an incredible week it has been. All the way through we just went from match to match never daring to hope for this. We have been so lucky at every turn we couldn't believe that it would hold out for us right to the trophy ceremony.

And there was still a small piece of icing on the cake. After the players come off court down that passage there's a small area where people can gather to get things signed. Rafa went off carrying his Masters trophy and it looked like he said that he was just going to put that safe inside and then come out to do signings. Since this took quite a while there wasn't quite the usual hoard of small children waiting. This meant that when he did finally reappear SE got him to sign her program and I got my Hero shirt signed as well.

Lucky he has the retentive memory of a goldfish when it comes to faces.

All we need to know is did anyone see us on TV? We did hold the flag over the barrier both as the players went on and as Rafa came off.

And I guess I need to know where I can get hold of the whole lot on DVD.

Sorry we failed to get VR.com a mention. We'll just have to leave that to the next intrepid Vamos Brigade members.

I think this is the end of our Rafadventure now.

It has been wonderful sharing it with you all.

Federer has 10 Masters crystal shields.

Nadal now has 5 Masters crystal shields.

They each have won one by playing against the other directly in a Masters final.

Federer in Miami on hard court.
Nadal in Monte Carlo on clay court.

Nadal will play Feli Lopez on Wed in Barcelona? They've only played one competition match before in 2003 which Lopez won. So that will be interesting as both have a lot of fans in Spain so it likely will be balanced cheering.

The 2006 ATP Champions Race (computed using only results since January) shows Rafael in position 3 now, having moved up 5 positions after Monte Carlo.

The entire list is at this link. Hard to find on the ATP site. Do not confuse with the rankings postion which is based on a rolling 12 months computation. He is still number 2 solidly there.

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/championsrace/

HOWEVER on Rafael's ATP 'His Activity' results for 2006 it is still showing his race position as 8th place after the Monte Carlo results although it does indicate the 100 race points he picked up there. Everything else is updated so why is the 'His Activity' page still showing race position of 8 rather than 3. Some kind of error on the ATP site that they failed to update the position? Anyone know?
